Let’s just get right down to it and start with the truth:
Prior to hiring a virtual assistant to help with my private practice, I was a stressed out mess. All of the coping skills, therapists, and yoga in the world barely made a dent in my anxiety, much less my lengthy to-do list. I had been holding on to the false belief that I could self-care my way through it for so long, without seeing any healthy changes or outcomes. In fact, instead, I started making unhealthy changes to incorrectly compensate for my stress: I decreased my caseload, despite the fact that it meant severing relationships that mattered deeply to me. I stopped showing up 100% for my patients. I acknowledged how alone I was feeling, and instead of making a productive life alteration, succumbed to the burn out. Dare I say, I even started to feel burdened by my work.
The time had come to sit down and really think through what I could do to actively turn things around. While my mental and emotional state were not ideal, my practice was still thriving, and my waitlist was continuing to grow. It was clear I couldn’t continue sacrificing my own wellbeing for the sake of my practice, but I also couldn’t let my blossoming business suffer… I needed help!
Before I could move on to the vital step of actually asking for help, there were a few things I had to do: First of all, I had to stop comparing myself to therapists that I mistakenly assumed were handling everything on their own with ease. Next, I had to let go of the misconception that I was the problem: No longer could I fall victim to the limiting belief that I wasn’t working hard enough, or didn’t have the right business strategies in place, or wasn’t participating in the best form of self-care to revitalize me. Lastly, I had to give up the fight against spending additional money to hire help. I had to make the decision to invest in my own wellbeing and the future of my practice. And honestly, I had to realize that I would probably be spending the same, if not less, money on hiring help than I already was on my endless stress-induced maladaptive coping strategies!
So, I made the leap and hired a virtual assistant.
Almost overnight, my life and my practice became tremendously less complicated than ever before. I couldn’t believe how reinvigorated I felt about my work and how easily it came to me to simply hand a task off to my VA, Maggie. All of my reservations about hiring a virtual assistant were left in the dust as, much to my surprise, I noticed that Maggie was meeting each and every one of my daily goals, sometimes beating me to the punch and accomplishing something before I had even added it to her workload. My clients rapidly fell in love with her, knew her by name, and were thrilled to have someone that was more accessible than I was, being that I was in back-to-back sessions every day.
Even outside of the practice, I found I had more time to focus on things I love and set in motion entrepreneurial that I had always dreamed of, but never had time for. Further still, and much to my surprise, I found that my income increased significantly as a result of the new marketing strategies that my new VA had put into place that I had never had the bandwidth for myself. You could say things were going pretty well! And all because I had summoned the courage to utter one four-letter word: H-E-L-P.
Just like that, my time was freed up to focus on what mattered most to me: My clients and my own precious, valuable energy. Just like that, my practice was thriving without me running myself ragged to help it do so. And just like that, by releasing fear and gaining the courage to ask for the help I eventually came to understand I deserve, I got my life back. I was revitalized.
There was no question I wanted to share this life-altering experience with other therapists who I was sure were facing the same battles (in fact, the same therapists I swore “had it all together” a few months prior). So, with my virtual assistant turned business partner, I began The Revitalized Therapist.
We are passionate about supporting the incredible work that talented and passionate therapists do every day. Our vision is to give therapists their lives back by relieving them of the marketing tasks necessary to help their practice thrive, while also equipping them with the tools to be empowered and encouraged. Our mission is to revitalize you. Just like that.
